Europe bans Ayurveda

Homoeopathic doctors in Kerala have protested against the denial of pay parity in the Sixth Pay Commission report with doctors practising other systems of medicine. The Indian Homoeopathic Medical Association also alleged that the disparities in salary was not in tune with the central government’s health policy which aimed at bringing all medical systems into national mainstream (As reported by The Hindu, dt. Jan 13, 2011). Ayurvedic practitioners have also demanded that they be given the enhanced pay package released to doctors of modern medicine. The minister who presided over the function, quite understandably toed the politically correct line of endorsing the claim. We should be struck with horror at the audacity of these practitioners with little or no testing of their products claiming parity with modern medicine!

Any drug which is going to be marketed in the European Union or the U.S.A., has to undergo extensive studies related to the results of physico-chemical, biological or microbiological tests as well as pharmacological and toxicological tests and clinical trials carried out on the product. Is there any ayurvedic medicine in the present market which can pass any of these tests? A whole slew of new products are launched every month with outlandish claims, but not subjected to any quality check or trials. These medicines are first advertised in news papers and television with bold claims which defy common sense. Almost all of them assert that these products are safe from side-effects, being 100% ayurvedic! The funniest part is that the promoters are simply ignorant of the chemical compositions of their products and have not even the faintest idea of how the remedial mechanism works. A good many among the products are aphrodisiacs or cosmetic in nature, with the distinguishing feature of exorbitant price demanded for them. People who grudge at the cost of allopathic medicines surprisingly don’t feel offended at buying this snake oil bottle. A new product from modern medicine is the culmination of painstaking research, and equally painstaking trials, while the other one are simply ‘marketed’ once it is formulated, yet the demanded price is comparable or even more. There are allegations of clandestine mixing of modern drugs in the herbal formulations for ensuring effectiveness. A prominent new generation ayurvedic aphrodisiac is accused to contain Tadalafil which is a very sensitive and dangerous medicine to be used only under strict medical prescription. The company, instead of proving their innocuousness went on a PR blitzkrieg thus silencing the opponents. We all know that alcohol consumption is harmful to health and warn people to desist from the practice. But, Kamilari, another new ayurvedic brand is exhorting its customers to continue drinking, while the harmful effects would be taken care of by the product! It is difficult to understand how a civilized society can allow such an advertising line which runs contrary to medical ethics as well as public morality.

Many ayurvedic concoctions contain powdered heavy metals which are highly poisonous, like lead, chromium and mercury. The level of these malefic substances in the end product confirms the suspicion that they are ingredients, rather than unintentional contaminants. EU directive 2004/24/EC defines a herbal medicinal product as “Any medicinal product, exclusively containing as active ingredients one or more herbal substances or one or more herbal preparations, or one or more such herbal substances in combination with one or more such herbal preparations” (italics my own). Note the word ‘exclusively’. How many ayurvedic medicines can claim that they are prepared exclusively from herbal ingredients? If such rigorous clinical trials are extended to them, most of them would have to be banned in India. Lead or mercury poisoning can lead to mental retardation, coma and damage to internal organs from which there is no cure. In children, lead causes reduced IQ and attention span, hyperactivity, impaired growth, reading and learning disabilities, hearing loss and a bunch of other problems.

It is in this context that we came to know of the European Union’s decision to ban ayurvedic products from May 1, 2011 onwards due to the adverse effects of such medicines. Ayurvedic and other herbal medicines will need to be licensed to comply with the EU directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive, 2004/24/EC, which takes effect from May 1 this year. Several studies had appeared in leading medical journals indicating a dangerously high level of harmful substances. In a study conducted under the aegis of National Institutes of Health in U.S. in 2008 came out with scary results. Out of 193 ayurvedic products tested, 20.7% came out with threateningly high levels of heavy metals, which reached as high as 20,800 ppm for mercury and 11.5 ppm for lead. The ban is nothing new for Ayurveda as Canada banned it in 2005. New York city banned three products, Jambrulin, Lakshmivilas Ras and Maha Sudarshan Choorna in 2005 as a study by the city department of health and mental hygiene detected 24,300 ppm and 2,190 ppm of lead in the first and third and 14,100 ppm of mercury in the second medicine.

The reactions to the ban were on predictable lines. Everyone saw the hand of pharma majors behind the bans, while keeping mum on the study reports. If these products are safe, why don’t they be subjected to rigorous testing before they leave the factory? Why don’t they submit it for tests to detect presence of heavy metals? Unfortunately, the answer is too obvious. The Indian ayurvedic industry is now a lucrative business unfamiliar with those restrictions faced by the allopathic pharma. You can freely churn out anything under the label of Ayurveda. Nobody asks them that a formulation was in use for 3000 years is no guarantee that it is safe. Oil was in use for lighting for thousands of years, but when electricity came, it had to give way. I don’t think anybody mourns the replacement of oil lamps today. Similarly, ayurvedic medicines have had to give way for modern medicine, but some vested interests who are sweeping huge profits and made cartels are resisting the change, in effect gambling with the health of India’s future generation and condemning the unsuspecting public to fall prey to their lust for money.

It is high time that India should take notice of the developments in Europe and America. If only for the foreign money it collects, ban on the sale of Ayurvedic products demands attention of the concerned people. If the claims made by the Europeans are true, these medicines should be banned in India too. It is high time that an authority may be set up which is assigned the task of testing each ayurvedic product before it hits the market. It should be enforced that only those products which clears the procedures would be allowed to be marketed. The unfortunate condition where there is no scrutiny for ayurveda must not be allowed to continue. Any one who have purchased ayurvedic medicines might have felt the astronomical price tag intimidating. Where does all this money go? There is practically no research, no trials and no feedback mechanism in place and your money goes to the profit columns of the companies. So, these corporations should be obligated to accept brakes in rampant media advertising and be more responsible to the society. The sooner we do it, the better.

hi,
It is true that Ayurveda is misused by a few to make quick money with bogus claims, such claims should be verified. , I am all for banning the quacks, they should never be entertained . But your comments on the Ayurveda itself is intriguing. The genuine ayurveda continues to be effective and carries no side effects. Your comment about oil laps giving way to electric lamps too is surprising. Just because a new baby is born in your home, will you send your aged parents to jungle? Everyone is relevant to the home, so does every good medical system. As I see in my uncle's ayurveda clinic, many patients who are fed up with series of antibiotics/injections are returning to ayurveda and getting cured. Of course not in a day or two, after all it is herbal and not full of chemical like your modern medicine. Well many of his patients are old aged but are free from the modern diseases which are the blessings of your modern medicines and lifestyle. Request you to pl have a healthy argument with an experienced ayurvedic practitioner if you are a truth seeker.

While thanking JN for his finding time to read my blog and comment on it, I don't agree with him. First of all, there is no need to argue in the case of modern science. It is the best we have in the best of scientific tradition. JN is silent on the facts I have presented like the heavy metal poisoning and is suggesting the increase in number of patients in one clinic as the counterweight. Just 100 years before, most of the Ayurvedic practitioners were under the impression that smallpox was the result of divine displeasure and were obviously helpless to prevent it. We know one fact clearly. When Ayurveda was the only form of medicine in India some centuries before, smallpox, cholera, leprosy and tuberculosis reigned here! All powerful Ayurvedics were impotent to prevent a single one of these deadly diseases. All of a sudden, by the end of the 20th century, the bunch is out again with claims that they have formulations to cure AIDS!

With a prejudiced mindset one never gives a damn to others arguments. Such is your response which does not merit a reply. But I write this lengthy message not just for you but for some unknown netizen who may land on this page any day. This will be my last visit to this site and let me not bother you further. You can remain deep inside that best of scientific tradition cage.

According to me Ayurveda has 3 kinds of practitioners - Over 50% are quacks who may give steroids
to provide quick results, they thrive in every city and come on TV Ads claiming Viagra and AIDS medicine.
Another say 20-30% do a Degree in Ayurveda but start giving Antibiotics as they don’t have faith in
what they were taught. The remaining small % are the genuine practitioners who swear by ayurveda and its relevance what if it was written by
Charaka/Shushrutha 1000 year back. There may be just one or two in a given city of this last category and they don’t come out to market to run Ads on news papers or appear on TV. Marketing the medicine is a western concept which fits well for the quacks and not genuine ones.

General public build an impression on Ayurveda not thru any study, but merely by looking at the first and second category of above practitioner who are in fact
the prime enemies of Ayurveda. I use Modern and Ayurveda on a 70-30 ratio, I continue to appreciate the modern medicine for the advancement and research it brings in. But there are enough short comings one has to bear in mind. I don’t suggest Ayurveda as a complete solution either. But with an open mind people can appreciate the other side of the argument. Let me throw some facts from the experiences in my immediate circle. Readers can make their own conclusions.

1. This person had piles/fissure and was experiencing extreme pain every morning. The surgery by a best surgeon in the city had only complicated the matter. Then patient turns to Arurveda. That Doc places a medicated thread in the fissure typical Charaka/shushrutha way. In just 2 weeks, this man becomes normal and now he is leading a peaceful retired life.
2. When there was chikungunya attack few years back, one Ayurveda Doc treated his father with Ayurveda itself, handling it as a type of fever without complicating too much. That old man has recovered so quickly, he never even stopped morning walk!. While most of the neighborhood who went for modern medicine complained the aftereffects of chikungunya ( joint pains) for over 6 months.
3. An woman with fertility issues has been treated by a Gynec for over 5 years in vain. Later someone suggested her Ayurveda. She had taken the a procedure for some 4-5 months. Now she is mother of 2 healthy kids. Her belief in Ayurveda is so much now that she never went for any vaccination for her kids!.

4. This mother was fed up with antibiotic courses for her nursery kid month after month with cough cold fever. One Ayurveda consultant suggests herbal medicines to build up immunity. Now the kid hardly complains of cold fever even in rainy seasons or after school trips.

.....contd.....

.... contd..

5. Another friend with severe back pain was treated in Apollo hospital for an year with no result. He could not even bend some of his fingers. Someone suggests him Ayurveda in Kerala. He goes there, taken some oil bath and other tasteless medicines. recovers 90% and returns to Hyd.
6. Weight loss - Virochana is the easiest and uncotrovercial way.

If Modern medicine has solution to every problem, why is that the people of 1950-60s were more healthy than the current elderly? Why there are more normal deliveries in Arurveda hospitals while modern hospitals have more C-section? The Indian men once known as sex masters are now running to sexologists for advice? How is it that our grandmothers having 8-10 kids with not a dose of modern medicine and still active in their 90s while the current generation cannot even withstand one kid delivery? Do you blame it all on the lifestyle alone? or the consumption of so much chemical thru the medicines? Just google on Harmful Effects of Antibiotic and the sites will wake you up. Again I know you will have counter arguments to defend your point or attack further on Ayurveda or suspect my points, but the facts remain facts. I openly appreciation modern medicine anyways, I hope you too will come across one day to consult a genuine (rather impotent in your own language) Ayurvedic practitioner.

Good bye..

JN,

Sorry if my comments have offended you in any way. Please don't stop visiting just because you find my arguments uncomfortable. It was precisely this mindset which isolated our society into water-tight compartments, jealously guarding knowledge which was outdated several thousands of years ago.

From your categorisation of Ayurvedic practitioners, it is revealed that only 10% of the doctors, including yourself, are genuine. But you confess that you use modern medicine and Ayurveda in a 70-30 ratio, which means that you are practitioner of modern medicine. I believe that you hold an MBBS degree, and has since taken to Ayurveda, otherwise what you are doing is - please don't be offended - quackery!. You yourself agree that Ayurveda is not a complete solution, which is precisely my opinion too. Ayurveda is nothing but a collection of grand mothers' medicines which help to lead a healthy life - if you properly select the tonics - and little more.

As you might be aware, the suggestion of some of the cases which were treated well is not acceptable as evidence in scientific practice. This reminded me of one of my friends who is a staunch supporter of the false-science Vaastu. He gave me some examples of people who suffered terribly because the houses they built was not according to its principles! The cases were genuine, as I personally knew them, but it didn't convince me that he was right on Vaastu. Do you agree with him? Even if I accept your five cases at face value, that proves nothing since you are giving them modern medicine (70%, as you said).

Now to answer your questions.

1. People of 1950-60s were not healthier than us. What evidence do you have in support of your claim?
2. There are more normal deliveries in Ayurvedic hospitals because there are no other C-section facilities there. It is little more than delivery at the patients' homes. Also, C-section is more profitable for hospitals.
3. Indian men were never sex masters. Sex medicines now appear more often, because we can afford them now as the economy has strengthened.
4. Our grand mothers had 8-10 children and that's one of the problems our nation is facing in the form of population explosion. Did you ever wonder why they had so many children? Because the life expectancy was so short that it was sheer luck if 50% of the children would mature into adults. Why the life expectancy was short? Because we had only Ayurveda.
